"Knowledge is the first step to your most beautiful skin. Every Wednesday, I’m opening my lab notes to share a new "class" on the clinical science behind skincare. Consider this your personal library of skin education - designed to help you look past the marketing and understand the real biology of aging." ~ Dr. Denese

The Science Behind One of the Most Difficult Areas to Address
We devote so much attention to the skin on our face—but the neck has its own unique anatomy and aging challenges.
Unlike facial aging, the visible changes we see in the neck are rarely caused by just one factor. The skin, underlying support structures and muscles can all contribute to the appearance of an aging neck.
THE NECK HAS RELATIVELY THIN SKIN
The neck has a relatively thin epidermis and dermis, yet this delicate skin is subjected to considerable movement and mechanical stress throughout the day.
As collagen and elastin change with age and cumulative environmental exposure, the skin can become increasingly prone to the appearance of laxity, crepiness, lines and textural changes.
IT'S CONSTANTLY IN MOTION
Think about how often you turn, tilt and bend your neck.
Repeated movement places ongoing mechanical stress on the skin. The underlying platysma—a broad, thin muscle extending across the neck— also plays an important role in the appearance of the aging neck.
Over time, changes in the skin and platysma can contribute to horizontal neck lines, vertical banding and loss of a smooth, firm-looking neck contour.
SUN DAMAGE DOESN'T STOP AT YOUR JAWLINE
The neck is frequently exposed to UV radiation, yet it is often overlooked when applying daily skincare and sunscreen.
Cumulative photodamage can affect collagen and elastin, contributing to visible changes in texture, elasticity and overall skin quality.
NECK AGING HAPPENS AT MULTIPLE LEVELS
This is what makes the neck particularly challenging.
Visible aging may involve a combination of:
- Skin laxity & crepiness
- Loss of collagen & elasticity
- Horizontal lines & wrinkles
- Changes in underlying fat
- Platysma muscle changes & vertical bands
- Loss of jawline definition
That means there isn't one single cause—and there isn't one simple solution.
DON'T STOP YOUR SKINCARE AT YOUR CHIN
The neck deserves the same consistent attention as the face.
A comprehensive neck-care routine should focus on supporting hydration, smoother-looking texture, firmness and elasticity, while daily broad-spectrum sun protection helps protect this frequently exposed area from additional UV damage.
YOUR FACE DOESN'T END AT YOUR JAWLINE.
Neither should your skincare.
